High-Ranked Militants Killed in Dagestan
Dagestan Interior Ministry announced October 2, 2005 the end of the special operation, which resulted in killing the so-called emirs of the Khasavyurt movement, including the 25-year old Vagit Khasbulatov (the Champion) and 29-year old Shamil Taimaskhanov (Zolya). Both militants were wiped out in Toturbiikala village Saturday.
The Saturday raid with the ultimate aim of catching the militant emirs began in Kizilyurt. The Khasavyurt police besieged a house, where Vagit Khasbulatov and Shamil Taimaskhanov were reported to be staying, but no militants were found there. When the police left the building, one of its inhabitants made a cell phone call to warn the wanted militants. The whereabouts of the addressee – the village of Toturbiikala – was tracked easily.

The officers ran into the militants at the central street of the village. The bandits started shooting and the police car’s driver crashed the VAZ of the militants. One of them attempted to fire a self-made grenade but it exploded in his hands, signaling the start of the emirs’ end - their car was riddled from the submachine guns.
