Sharapova to Miss Beijing Olympics
Russia's Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the WTA Rogers Open in Montreal because of the shoulder injury. The MRI scan revealed two small tears and Sharapova will miss the Beijing Olympics that begins August 11.
The Montreal tournament has never been successful for Maria. The beautiful Russian wasn’t particularly willing to attend this season, but the tournament is referred to the first category and WTA’s response to refusal of tennis stars to play in it is too nervous.
The fact that there was something wrong with Maria was clear from the very beginning of her match vs. Poland’s Marta Domachowska. In essence, Sharapova was a shadow of herself, playing without her powerful service. She made 17 double errors and summoned doctors two times, to no avail though. Maria held out till the very end all pain notwithstanding and prevailed 7-5 5-7 6-2.
Sharapova withdrew from the Rogers Open, but it wasn’t the worst news. The doctors found two small tears in the tendons of her shoulder and Maria said she would miss the Olympics.
“This is something that needs a lot of time to heal. It really hurts me to say I have to miss the Olympics,” Sharapova said as quoted by BBC Sport, which referred to her official web. Maria may also miss the U.S. Open in New York.
