Garbajosa Signed In with Moscow Region’s Khimki BC
Khimki Basketball Club inked yesterday a contract with Spain’s forward Jorge Garbajosa from Toronto Raptors. Garbajosa is the second basketball player, whom the Moscow region’s club attracted from Raptors. Former NBA Guard Carlos Delfino signed with Khimki past week.
Khimki has finally done what none of Russia’s clubs managed to do before. This basketball club has attracted not the NBA veterans or average players, but real stars and leaders. Jorge Garbajosa arrived in Toronto in 2006 and became the key player of Canadian club in the first season. He was one of the best NBA newcomers of 2006/2007 but the injury ended all hopes for the brilliant career there.
Garbajosa played no more than seven games with the Raptors past season due to the leg and ankle injuries. His injuries and general unwillingness to sacrifice the Olympic season in the Spain’s squad were the basic reasons for terminating the contract with Raptors.
Nowadays, he may play for Spain in the 2008 Olympics and for Russia’s Khimki in the rest of time. It is yet unclear whether he will manage to recover up to his former aptness. But one thing is obvious – by attracting Garbajosa, Khimki has finally received the leader the club needed so much.
The arrival of Garbajosa and Delfino to Khimki inspires optimism. But Khimki has spent huge amount of money for selection campaign in the past years, to no avail though. A year ago, for instance, the Moscow region’s club lured nearly all best players with the RF passports and attracted Daniel Ewing from Los Angeles Clippers, but the ambitious hopes, the ULEB victory and the triumph in Russia’s championship, didn’t materialize. The sole title that the club has recently won is last year’s Cup of Russia.
