Washington Silent About Russia’s Bombers in Cuba
Washington bureaucrats aren’t particularly eager to comment on the possible return of Russia’s long-distance strategic bombers to Cuba as the Kremlin’s response to stationing the U.S. missile defense shield in Eastern Europe.
"I don't think there have been any reports from, official response from, the Russian government, so I wouldn't comment on it," said White House Press Secretary Dana Perino.
According to Perino, President George Bush recently reiterated to his Russia’s counterpart that the missile defense system doesn’t threaten Moscow.
"The president repeated that our missile defense system should not be seen as a threat to Russia. We want to actually work with the Russians to design a system that Russia, and Europe and the U.S. could work on together as equal partners and we'll continue to do that," Perino specified.
Gonzalo Gallegos from the U.S. Department of State said he was unaware of using Cuba for strategic bombers of Russia. The third missile defense site in Europe won’t threaten Russia, the official pointed out in line with the general trend of the U.S. bureaucrats.
