Not the Worst Place for Women
Having worked in tandem with analysts of Harvard University and the University of California, the analysts of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos released past week the regular Global Gender Gap-2007 report. Of 128 states, Russia climbed eight positions to No. 45 in terms of the gap between men’s and women’s opportunities.
In the WEF indices, Russia rates above France, Greece, the Republic of Czechia, Singapore, Japan, India and China. The leading trio predictably includes Sweden, Norway and Finland, while the real surprise is that the United States (31), Britain (11) and the Netherlands (12) are out of the top 10. At the same time, Philippines rates No. 6 and Cuba and Belarus are ahead of Austria and Israel in the first third of the list.
For Russia, the key difficulty is not granting equal opportunities in the economic field but rather the problem of political chances and representation. The equal involvement of women in economy is the common feature for emerging markets. According to the WEF report, Vietnam and Philippines prevail in this indicator, Moldova ranks the No. 5, and Sweden follows it.
