Russias Top Lawyer Arrested in Spain
Alexander Gofshtein, a famous lawyer from Padva and Partners who defended Mikhail Khodorkovsky, has been detained in Spain on money laundry charges. A Madrid court is to decide on the penalty for Gofshtein on Friday. Genrikh Padva has set out for the Spanish capital to support his colleague.
Alexander Gofshtein was detained in the prison of Soto del Real, outside Madrid, where he was on a visit to see his client, the notorious Zakhariy Kalashov, aka Shakro. This spring, Kalashov was arrested in the United Arab Emirates and extradited to Spain on money laundry and crime group charges. Kalashov hired Alexander Gofshtein to defend him.

Alexander Gofshtein flew to Spain on Wednesday. No one has heard from him since then. Genrikh Padva, Gofshteins senior partner in Padva and Partners, says Gofshtein has been detained on an absolutely stupid accusation of money laundry. Padva flew to Madrid on Thursday to help his partner out.

Spains police has reported that the Russian lawyer has been detained under the second stage of the Wasp operation to crack down on the Russian mafia. The first stage of the operation in June 2005 involved armored vehicles, helicopters and 400 policemen who conducted searches throughout Spain, arresting 30 Georgians and Russians, including Zakhariy Kalashov who were later charged with money laundry and organizing a chain gang.
