Russian Boxing Wannabes to Fight in Stuttgart
Germany’s Stuttgart is hosting Universum Champions Night, a major boxing event of the year, on Saturday. Several promising boxers from the former Soviet Union are expected to go onstage.
Russia’s Grigory Drozd will face Firat Arslan for the title of the WBA Eliminator, though initially the bout was planed to be an official meeting for the WBA Cruiserweight title. The two boxers are ranked sixth and seventh in the WBA list, respectively, and the Stuttgart fight will be a great chance for them to challenge Jamaica’s O’Neil Bell, the reigning WBA and WBC World Champion in the near future.
WBO Intercontinental Champion Alexander Dimitrenko of Ukraine will try to defend his title for the 3rd time in a fight against Argentine’s Gonzalo Omar Basile, who won 25 out of his 26 fights. The promising Ukrainian has already been praised with a flattering comparing with another Ukrainian boxer. “Alexander has undertaken a good development but he still needs time. At the end of next year he should be close for a title shot, then he can become a new Klitschko,” Dimitrenko’s coach Fritz Sdunek says. Sdunek talks the talk as he coachied both Vitaly and Vladimir Klitschko and helped them to make it to the top.
Alexander Alexeev, another hope of Russia, is to fight at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart too. The Russian cruiserweight has gained all possible titles in all professional sports except for an Olympic title. After a triumph the Boxing Championship in China last year, Alexeev went on to win bouts in prize fighting. He has won six out of six fights so far. In Stuttgart, the Russian faces Argentina’s Luis Oscar Ricali.
