Sharapova, Dementyeva, Kuznetsova in Same Group for WTA Final
The Women's Tennis Association drew up groups for the final championship of the year on Sunday in Madrid. The world's top eight women players will take part in the championship November 7-12. According to the association's official site, No. 1-ranked Amelie Mauresmo of France and No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova of Russia will head the yellow and red teams.
Mauresmo will be accompanied on her team by No.3-ranked Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne, No.5-ranked Russian Nadezhda Petrova and No.8-ranked Swiss Martine Hingis. Sharapova will play with No. 4-ranked Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, No. 7-ranked Russian Elena Dementyeva and No. 6-ranked Belgian Kim Clijsters.
The championship will determine the best player of the year. Mauresmo, Henin-Hardenne and Sharapova are thought to be the leading contenders.
In the group championship, each player will play all the other players in her group to determine the leaders within the groups. The two top players from each group will play in semi-finals and the final match will take place on November 12.
