The Number of Samara Blast Victims is Growing
June 8, The number of victims who suffered from the powerful explosion in Samara on Friday, June 4, has reached 70 people, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.
The explosion ripped through a market in Samara, some 800 km southeast of Moscow at 12.10 p.m. last Friday.

Today a 35-year old severely wounded Vladimir Saakyan, died at the hospital. According to the latest data, the explosion killed eleven people and an unborn five-month child. City hospitals treat 37 people, 17 of the total are treated at outpatient departments. The total number of victims reached 70, including the dead and those who received aid at outpatient departments.

The Samara prosecutor’s office instituted a criminal case under two articles: terrorism and murder. The explosive device which went off on Friday consisted of one kilo of plastic and a blaster fuse and was fixed one meter high on the back outside wall of a shopping container.

The investigation examines three versions: a terror act, a gangland war for control over the market or a crime, aimed against specific persons, selling on the market. These versions were reported by Russian Deputy Prosecutor-General Sergey Gerasimov, now on a visit to Samara. However, both prosecutors and police said they were treating the blast as likely arising from a dispute over control of the market.

Samara Region authorities have promised a 500 thousand ruble reward for the information that will help investigate the case.

Incidentally, the government of the Samara Region will render material aid to victims and families of the deceased as a result of the blast on the market in Samara. An appropriate decision was signed by Samara Governor Konstantin Titov.

The families of the deceased will receive 100,000 rubles, those hospitalized – 50,000 rubles, and victims, treated at outpatient departments – 5,000 rubles. “If victims need plastic surgeries, they will be operated on at the expense of the regional budget,” ITAR-TASS learnt from regional Public Health Minister Galina Gusarova.
