Putin Guaranteed Sochi 2014 Olympics
Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he didn’t fear that Sochi could be stripped of the right to host 2014 Olympics in the wake of the events in South Ossetia. It is the International Olympic Committee that decides on the Olympics’ location, the prime minister pointed out.
Vladimir Putin made the respective statement December 4, during the annual TV question-and-answer intercourse with the nation. A resident of Nalchik-town of Russia asked whether the West would use the events in South Ossetia to deprive Russia of the right to host 2014 Winter Olympics.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) has no grounds to disqualify Russia as the host-country for the Winter Olympics, the prime minister said, hoping that the decisions of IOC won’t be politically-governed in future.
Georgia raised the issue about the transfer of 2014 Olympics from Sochi in early September, soon after the end of the military clashes in South Ossetia. The IOC, however, responded it was quite satisfied with Russia’s guarantees given for holding the Olympics.
