Venezuela May Get Atomic Energy
Russia will consider the possibility of working with Venezuela in the area of atomic energy, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday during a meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at Putin’s residence in Novo-Ogarevo. Putin noted that the “strengthening of cooperation in all spheres,” including energy, heavy industry and high technology.
Putin mentioned the construction of drilling equipment in the Gulf of Venezuela separately, saying it would open new possibilities for energy cooperation between the two countries.
Putin thanked Chavez for the “warm reception” shown the Russian strategic bombers that made a training flight to Venezuela. He also noted that the two countries plan to hold joint naval exercises, and a Russian Northern Fleet squadron is on its way now to Venezuela. “I am prepared to discuss military technical cooperation,” Putin said. “Latin America is an important link in the chain of our multipolar world.”
Russia will provide Venezuela with $1 billion in credit for purchases of Russian arms. Between 2005 and 2007, Venezuela purchased a total of $4.4 billion in Russian weaponry.
