Russia to Call for Embargo on Weapon Supplies to Georgia
For Russia, the ban on supplying weapons to Georgia will be one of the highlights at the Caucasus negotiations that Geneva will host October 15, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced during the sitting of Valdai International Debating Club.
“First of all, we will be deliberating there how to prevent another aggression, and the task of Georgia’s non-militarization is in the limelight,” Lavrov told participants of Valdai Club, which meeting was arranged by RIA Novosti, Foreign and Defense Council, The Moscow News newspaper, Russia In Global Policy and Russia Profile magazines.

The standing of Moscow is that it is necessary to impose embargo on weapons supplies to Georgia. “At least as long as Saakashvili is in power there,” the minister specified.

Lavrov said the agenda of Geneva talks will set forth issues of stability and security in the region, the return of refugees and any other interesting issues as agreed by the meeting’s participants. As to the status of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Russia won’t discuss it there, as the issue has been decided, Lavrov made clear. “We aren’t going to discuss recognizing or the status of South Ossetia and Abkhazia,” the minister pointed out.

The decision to hold international talks for settlement of Georgia’s conflict with South Ossetia and with Abkhazia was made September 8, when Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
