Flag-Bearer Chosen for Olympic Team
Captain of the Russian basketball player Andrey Kirilenko will be the flag-bearer for the 2008 Russian Olympic team at the opening ceremony in Beijing, president of the Russian Olympic Committee Leonid Tyagachev stated. Tyagachev was speaking with journalists at Olympic committee headquarters in Moscow. “Would you like Kirilenko to carry the flag?” he asked. “Good, I’ll fulfill your wish.”
An Olympic Committee commission of athletes chose Kirilenko to carry the flag on July 24. Tennis player Maria Sharapova and gymnasts Elena Isinbaeva and Yury Borzakovsky were also considered for the honor.
The Russian men’s basketball team will play their first match on August 10. On Thursday, chairman of the Olympic Committee athletes commission Olga Brusnikina noted that Kirilenko would have sufficient time to rest up after the opening ceremony August 8.
