State Dept. Says “Good Thing” No Bombers in Cuba
The administration of U.S. President George W. Bush has responded to Moscow’s official statement that no bombers are being stationed in Cuba. State Department acting deputy spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos called it “a very good thing” that the report of the planes was false. He said that Washington had been aware from the beginning that the anonymous statement was not confirmed by anyone after it was reported.
U.S. government spokesmen refused to comment on the report that Russia would station bomber in Cuba as retaliation for the U.S. missile defense program in Eastern Europe. On Tuesday, White House spokesman Dana Perino called the report “hypothetical.”
The Washington Post reported that Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida asked U.S. Air Force chief of staff nominee Norton Schwartz about the possibility of Russian bomber being stationed in Cuba. "I would certainly offer the best military advice that we engage the Russians not to pursue that approach," Schwartz replied.
Head of the department of press service and information of the Russian defense Ministry Ilshat Baichurin stated on Thursday that the disinformation on Moscow’s intentions had its source in certain circles in those countries that are opening military bases on Russia’s borders. The report appeared in Izvestia newspaper on Monday.
