Georgia for Peaceful Abkhazia Solution
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has confirmed that the Georgian leadership is unwaveringly determined to resolve the conflict in Abkhazia exclusively through peaceful means. “We are working on the details of a plan for that regulation along with the United States and European Union,” Saakashvili said Thursday at a joint press conference in Batumi after negotiations with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Saakashvili thanked the German government for its “fast and adequate” response to and involvement in a Georgian-Abkhazian settlement. “This is what we were seeking when we demanded internationalization of the negotiation process,” Saakashvili stated. Twentieth century conflicts should be resolved in the 21st century by “modern European methods,” he noted.

Steinmeier repeated his country’s official position and confirmed that Germany supports the territorial integrity of Georgia and considers Abkhazia an indivisible part. He called the situation a dead end that requires effort to emerge from. He emphasized that a systematic, direct dialog was needed between the Georgian and Abkhazian sides. “Tomorrow I go to Sukhumi to convince those with whom I will have talks that direct dialog is necessary,” he promised, adding that the conflict will not be resolved quickly. Nonetheless, he said, Germany wants o make its contribution to the resolution of the conflict. Steinmeier leaves Batumi for Sukhumi on Friday.
