Ukrainian Lawmakers Demand $90bn from Russia
Our Ukraine – People’s Self-Defense faction of Ukrainian parliament initiated a bill demanding from Russia to acknowledge the debt of $90 billion. According to the bill masterminds, Russia owes it for devaluating Sberbank deposits of Ukrainians, Kommersant-Ukraine reported.
To become a law, the bill requires approval of all Supreme Rada. After it, the cabinet will have three months to work out some methods for settling the accounts at Russia’s cost. Moreover, Russia is to be notified about the debt and acknowledge it.

The tricky point is that Ukraine hasn’t ratified the document whereby Russia is a legal successor to the former Soviet Union both for the state debt and assets.

Ukraine set to paying back the debt of Soviet Sberbank in early this year – Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko had pledged to do it before moving into the PM office. Each of 1,389 Ukrainians received $200 by the start of February. The local bankers urge to cease payments, claiming they accelerate the inflation and widen the budget shortage.
